Barcode Scanners
-Handheld -Handsfree -Industrial Scanners
DCS Australia offers a range of barcode scanners to suit every need and budget.Scanners range from low-cost CCD-type scanners, right up to high volume, in-counter omni-directional laser scanners with scales. Purchase prices can be anything from a few hundreds of dollars to several thousand dollars. This article will briefly explain the main technologies behind barcode scanning, where they are used and why. This guide will briefly explain how to install, setup and trouble shoot a barcode scanner. Please see our software section for serial port viewing software to test RS-232 scanners. Consider these selection notes: - If the intended application is a light duty site (and light duty means a clean environment with operators normally used to taking care of the equipment), for example, a chemist shop, low cost CCD scanners can be used. A hardware store or plumbing supply store ( a tough environment) should definitely consider something a bit more robust.
- In the light duty site, other considerations need to be taken into account. Users or the owner may have a preference for omni-directional scanners, so install them. The whole scanner range is available. Tough sites - selection range is reduced, but there is still a reliable range of choices.
- Think about customer traffic. High customer traffic levels with medium to high numbers of items per sales should use high end omni-directional scanners in preference to the low cost CCD or single line laser scanners. The key to selection here is ease of use by operators, and the probable need to scan and pack at the same time. Also the issue of reliability should be considered - high use sites need equipment capable of that high use.
- Perhaps site aesthetics need be considered. Difficult to document, but maybe the user wants something to look modern or maybe tough-looking. For instance, it wouldn't be visually pleasing to combine a square box scanner with an environment where everything else is curves and shapes.
The following is a brief description of the various types of barcode scanners, and what they are used for. If you have any questions about the type of barcode reader needed, please contact us. Our staff will be able to help you make the right decision. - Linear Imagers - These scanners use a camera to scan the barcode, so they have a number of advantages. As they have no moving parts, they are very reliable and robust. They are also omni-directional, and fairly low cost.
- CCD Scanners - These scanners are low cost and very robust. They provide reliable hand held scanning in low volume environments.
- Laser Scanners - These scanners provide a bright aiming line to make scanning easier. Some can be used handsfree
- Omni Directional - These scanners can be used hand-free, and are ideal for high volume environments. Barcodes can be scanned from any angle, so scanning is quick and easy.
- Industrial Scanners - These scanners are very robust and are ideal for high volume environments, such as belt scanning.
- Cordless Scanners - These scanners have the advantage of flexibilty and ease of use.
