DCS Australia offers a large range of POS and barcode printers to suit every need.
Choosing the right printer
Printers can quite often be a real cause for concern. Commonly heard complaints are: "I wasn't told the printer was so noisy!", or "It's so slow!". There are 2 basic choices to consider, beyond brand issues:- Impact printers usually print at around 3- to 3.5lines per second, whereas thermal printers from 15- to 27-lines per second
- Impact printers create noise, whereas thermal printers are silent
- Impact printers can produce a receipt and journal copy (on some models), whereas thermal printers can't
- Impact printers use ribbons, and thermal printers don't
- Impact printers use lower cost consumables
- Impact printers can't reasonably be expected to print graphics, whereas thermal printers can.
Other basic considerations are:
Windows environments usually don't print anything until the entire transaction is completed. In high traffic environments, where there are a lot of individual items per sale, or where graphics images need be printed, choose a high speed thermal printer.
In environments where a receipt is only required for a limited number of transactions, even with Windows, an impact printer can be used. If a receipt and journal roll is needed, then impact.
Compatibility concerns:
The printer is (normally) used to open a cash drawer. One basic problem, has been the comment that the printer won't trigger the cash drawer. There are two possible causes to this problem:
1. POS software needs to be configured correctly. We have seen a printer or cash drawer that is faulty "out of the box" on only a very, very few occasions. Different printers need different commands to drive the trigger pulse to the draw; in some printers, and p0 in others. Check with the software supplier how this configuration is done, and with the printer supplier for the draw control command.
2. Wrong cash drawer has been used, and the drawer control circuit in the printer has been damaged. This situation is not covered by warranty. Usually happens when a second hand drawer has been used that has either the wrong voltage rating, or is incorrectly wired. |
